Dean C. Swanson, of Cornelia, Georgia, passed away on October 16, at the age of 94. A United States Air Force fighter pilot, telecommunications leader, and philanthropist, Dean helped connect Northeast Georgia to a changing world while helping preserve the heritage that made it home.
Dean was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy’s Class of 1957. He accepted a commission in the United States Air Force and served for six years as a fighter pilot. His assignments included flying the F-100 Super Sabre in the Philippines, Arizona and Louisiana.
In 1957, he married Helen Kay Stewart. Their marriage spanned 65 years, until Kay’s death on their anniversary, June 9, 2021. Together they raised three children, Sabrina, Stewart, and Christopher, and built a family legacy closely tied to Northeast Georgia.
Dean joined Standard Telephone Company in 1963. He served as vice president and operations manager from 1964 to 1970, executive vice president from 1970 to 1978, and president from 1978 to 1991, later serving as president of Standard Group, Inc., which was formed when STC added cellular, internet and cable T.V. service throughout northeast Georgia. His career helped guide the independent telephone industry through profound technological and regulatory change.
His leadership extended beyond Cornelia. A past president of the Georgia Telephone Association, he also chaired the United States Telephone Association in 1990 and appeared before congressional committees on national communications policy. In 2018, he was inducted into the Independent Telecommunications Pioneer Association’s Telephone Hall of Fame.
Dean also helped shape the community’s economic future. He helped start and chaired the Habersham County Industrial Park and was a Rotarian, contributing to the civic life and growth of the community he called home. His love of aviation also left a lasting mark: he and Senator John Foster helped lay out the original Habersham County Airport, and both returned to cut the ribbon celebrating airport improvements in July 2024.
Together, Dean and Kay made lasting investments in education, the arts, and regional history. They helped establish the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia at the Sautee Nacoochee Center, supporting a home for the region’s pottery traditions and the people whose work carried those traditions forward. Their philanthropy also supported the Swanson Center for the Performing Arts and Mass Communications at Piedmont University. In 2012, they received the Governor’s Award for the Arts and Humanities from Governor Deal. At the University of North Georgia, they provided the original endowment funding in 1989 for the facility now known as the H. Milton Stewart Sr. Evergreen Learning Center, and later supported its renovation for life-long educational programs. These gifts created opportunities for learning and cultural enrichment that will continue to serve generations.
Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Kay Stewart Swanson, and his daughter, Sabrina Kay Swanson. His family includes sons and daughters-in-law, Stewart and Carol Swanson and Chris and Leigh Swanson; and grandchildren Alex Mixon, Kaylee Grant, Janna Kay Swanson, Kelley Swanson, Sarah DeLoach, and Dean Wesley Swanson.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many friends, family members, and caregivers who touched Dean’s life with their kindness, compassion, and unwavering support.
