HELEN POSTON SCOTT, 73 went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at her residence after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services for Helen Poston Scott, age 73, of Cornelia will be held at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest Georgia, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2014 with Rev. Trent Smith officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, College Park, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2014. Born on July 23, 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia. Daughter of the late Sam Nicholas and Ruby Nicholas Patterson. Helen has resided in Cornelia since 1967. She retired from Standard Telephone Company/Alltel after 27 years as the Manager of Phone Shop, Centralized Payments & Special Equipment Sales. Mrs. Scott was a member of Hazel Creek Baptist Church and was a member of Standard Telephone Ladies Club; and a former Board Member of Grace Gate. After retirement, extensive travels took her to Greece, Canada, and all over the United States. Mrs. Scott was the first female pilot to be licensed in Habersham County. Her hobbies were the love of flowers and working her vegetable garden. Her pride and joy were Meagan, Molly and JB, three white Schnauzers. Survivors include her loving husband of 11 years, Jack Scott of Cornelia, daughter Lynn Christopher of Suwanee, Georgia, daughter Deborah Flugstad (Tyson) of Kennesaw, Georgia, son Jim Poston (Ann) of Mt. Airy, Georgia, step daughter, Courtney Thornsbury (Bob) of Clearafield, Utah; surviving sisters include Betty McDonald (Tommy) of Ellenwood, Georgia, Pat Fishburne (Jeff) of Newnan, Georgia, Shirley Hyde (Rodney) of McCormick, South Carolina; surviving brother, Bill Nicholas of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Lauren and Heather Christopher, Katarina and Tyler Flugstad, Anna and Michael Poston, Alyssa Thornsbury. In lieu of flowers special memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
