Nevelyn Hawkins Chandley, age 76, of Alto, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
Nevelyn was born on March 27, 1950 in Cobb County, Georgia to the late Colquitt Hawkins, Jr. and Myrtle Huffmaster Hawkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerald Chandley, Sr.; grandson, Christopher Chandley; brothers, Colquitt Hawkins, III and George E. Hawkins.
Nevelyn was a spunky, one-of-a-kind woman whose unique personality and unforgettable spirit made her truly special. She had a way of bringing laughter into a room and making people smile with her own special charm. You never quite knew what Nevelyn might say or do next, but one thing was certain, she would always keep you on your toes!
You never quite knew what she might do next, but you could almost guarantee it would leave you with a story to tell and a smile on your face. She was the kind of mother who not only allowed her grandchildren to prank call her but happily played along, making the memories that much sweeter. She wasn’t afraid of a little adventure either, once famously riding her motorized scooter across the highway to the gas station, where she even managed to get “pulled over” by the police!
Her personality was just as colorful as her hair, which could be purple, blue, or whatever wild color she felt like trying next. She even trusted her granddaughters to cut her hair and her grandson to dye her hair, without a worry in the world about how it might turn out. She embraced life’s silliness, welcomed a little mischief, and never missed an opportunity to make those around her laugh.
She wasn’t your typical mother, and that’s exactly what made her so special. She leaves behind a lifetime of laughter, unforgettable stories, and memories that her family will cherish forever. While she will be deeply missed, there is comfort in knowing that the stories she gave us will continue to bring laughter for generations to come.
Survivors include her daughter, Rochelle Simmemon, of Alto; son, Jerald Chandley, Jr., of Alto; grandchildren, Victoria Pitts, Makayla Simmemon, Brittany Chandley, Savannah Hogsed, Valarie Chandley, Harley Chandley, Jake Chandley; great-grandchildren, DJ, Joyce, and Maximus; as well as a host and extended family and friends; and her beloved dog, Pebbles.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, October 25, 2026 at the Friendly Mission Baptist Church with Rev. Devin O’Kelley, Rev. Danny O’Kelley, and Mr. Truett Simmemon officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Whitfield Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel at 1370 Industrial Boulevard, Baldwin, Georgia 30511. Telephone: 706-778-7123.
