Ray Harrison Bowen born April 16, 1947, in Clarkesville, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

He was a devoted brother, a faithful servant of God, and a highly decorated veteran who deeply loved his family and his country.

A lifelong and dedicated member of Alto Congregational Holiness Church, Ray’s faith was a guiding light throughout his life. After completing high school in 1965, he answered the call to serve his country, being inducted into the United States Army on April 20, 1966.

Ray served with profound honor and bravery as an Infantryman during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of Specialist 4. His extraordinary valor and sacrifice were recognized with numerous military commendations, most notably the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. His prestigious decorations also include the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, an Overseas Bar, and marksman badges as both an Expert (M-16 Rifle) and Sharpshooter (M-14 Rifle). Following his courageous overseas service, he was honorably discharged.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, C.H. Bowen and Margaret Bowen, as well as his brother, Roy Bowen.

Ray’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by his surviving family, including his brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Carolyn Bowen, along with his extended family, friends, and his beloved church community.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 19, 2026 at the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel with Pastor Tim Beasley and Pastor Scott Ledbetter officiating.

In lieu of visitation, the family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Habersham County Wall of Honor, P.O. Box 198, Demorest, Georgia or to the Grant Reeves Honor Guard, 198 E. Louise Street Clarkesville, Georgia 30523.
